Default How To: Microsquirt a Duratec

Pics updated 1/18/2017

Ok so I guess itís time to document my Duratec Microsquirt setup

I did this setup using an 05 escape 2.3 (same as focus), it is now on a 2014 fusion 2.5, with the Ranger coil pack mounted on the valve cover, not coil on plug, I will try to ad COP info as well though since I will be using that on other projects. I am tuning using a slot MAF but MAP wiring will be included. I used a PWM IAC from a 93 ranger in this setup, I could not get the microsquirt to control the newer ones, this also required me to make an adaptor plate which will be pictured below. This write up is just for the basics to get you running, if you want extra stuff you will have to plan for it and figure out how to add it yourself.

I built my harness using plugs from an 01 ranger harness so colors could be off depending on years but itís a start

First off, what to buy: Total cost $573.50, you can easily have everything you need and be running for under $600

Microsquirt: get the 8 foot harness you will have all the wire you need $369
http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/m...ess-p-509.html

Coolant temp sensor: comes with pigtail (fits in stock location) $17.75
http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/g...tail-p-58.html

IAT sensor: Not needed if using a slot maf setup, the IAC is built into the maf. also has pigtail and will fit stock location on manifolds that have one if not you need a bung or something $22.25
http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/g...tail-p-62.html

Quadspark: drives the coils, could also use Bip373's and build something yourself to do that same thing for a little less money $89
http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/q...ule-p-481.html

Map sensor: $64 not required for a maf setup
http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/m...sor-p-161.html

Map sensor pigtail: $11.50
http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/m...ail-p-163.html

Map sensor not required, if you can find the values and calibrate the microsquirt to use the stock FORD MAP that will work fine. If using a MAF setup like me a MAP is not even required at all
-----------

First off when you get the microsquirt you will want to take the harness and remove all the plastic sheathing so you can sort the wires you are and arent using. The wires are color coded and labeled with words all the way down the wires so they are easy to figure out.

Here is a pin list with color and description for the Microsquirt
http://www.useasydocs.com/details/wire.htm

Quick rundown of what you will be using, more detail in excel screenshot below

1. 12V power to ms from main relay, 3 amp fuse

5. Spare 1/MAF, pin 3 at MAF plug

6. Flex Fuel, idealy used for launch control if desired

7. IAC, to white wire at IAC plug

8. Fuel pump, to fuel relay, ground side of control circuit

9. inj1, goes to injector 1 and 4

10. inj2, goes to Injector 2 and 3

11. ign2, see quadspark info below

12. ign1, see quadspark info below

15. boot loader, leave about a foot or so coiled up in your loom so you can load code if you need to

16. Can be used for fan relay control

18. Sig ground, splice with 20 and run to signal return wire of sensors, IAT, ECT, TPS, MAP, MAF

20. Sig ground, splice with 18 and run to signal return wire of sensors, IAT, ECT, TPS, MAP, MAF

22. Ground, splice with 23 and run to good engine ground

23. Ground, splice with 22 and run to good engine ground

24. MAP, to green wire at sensor

25. Coolant (also known as ECT), to yellow wire at sensor

26. IAT, to orange wire at sensor

27. TPS, to grey/white wire at sensor

28. 5V vref, to brown/white wire at TPS, red wire at MAP

32. Crank + comes in a sheilded cable with 33 this is the red wire, goes to the grey wire at the sensor

33. Crank - comes in a sheilded cable with 32 this is the black wire, goes to the blue wire at the sensor

34. O2/wideband, goes to your widebandís output wire

35. Run to signal wire for your tach gauge

Quadspark info: Diyautotune link, ignore the pullup stuff you only need the 2 spark outputs from the microsquirt
http://www.diyautotune.com/tech_arti...icrosquirt.htm

Quadspark wire colors and uses:
Yellow- spark A in
White- spark A out
Orange- spark B in
Pink- spark B out
Dark green- spark C in
Light green- spark C out
Blue- spark D in
Violet- spark D out
4 black wires- ground

Hereís how to wire it up:
Spark A at Quadspark will be used for Ign1 (plugs 1 and 4)
Spark B at Quadspark will be used for Ign2 (plugs 2 and 3)
C and D will not be used for ranger coil pack applications

Run all 4 black wires to a good ground
Pin 12 at the microsquirt (ing1) will go to the yellow wire at the quadspark
Pin 11 at the microsquirt (ign 2) will go to the orange wire at the quadspark

Now to the coil pack connector:
Quadspark white goes to coil pack Tan/White
Quadspark Pink goes to coil pack Tan/Orange
The coil pack Red/Light green wire is 12v supplied by a fuse

Sensor connector wire colors and what ms wire goes to them, also in the screen shots:

TPS
grey/red, sig return, ms pin18/20
grey/white, signa,l ms pin27
brown/white, 5v vref, ms pin 28

MAP
red, 5v vref, ms pin 28
green, signa,l ms pin 24
black, sig return, ms pin 18/20

Crank
Dark Blue, -, ms pin33
Grey, +, ms pin 32

Coil pack
tan/white ign1 see quadspark info
red/light green power from fuse
tan/orange ign2 see quadspark info

IAC

red, power from fuse (same as injectors in my case)
white/blue signal ms pin7

ECT
yellow, signal ms pin 25
black, sig return ms pin 18/20

Injectors

1. Tan
2. White
3. Brown-Yellow
4. Brown-Light Blue
All4 Injectors have a red wire that is supplied with 12v, this wire is shared with the IAC

I AM NOT RESPONSIBE IF YOU BREAK STUFF, BLOW STUFF UP, OR KILL ANYONE

Ok time for some Coil on plug info, we are going to go with a waste spark setup instead of sequential for 2 reasons. 1: I don’t feel like figuring out how to set up the cam sensor, and there are multiple different cam sensors being used on duratecs. 2: the Microsquirt already has a limited I/O and using the 2 extra pins would make having things like fan control or a tach output difficult. If you want to go sequential you can it just takes a little extra wiring to turn ALED and WLED into spark C and D, but I’m not covering that.

So it’s pretty simple, basically you have ignition 1 and 2 from the microsquirt (pin 12 and 11 respectively). Ignition 1 is for cylinder 1 and 4; Ignition2 is for cylinder 2 and 3.
Here is how I would wire it up: I am using a 2.3 escape as my example for wire colors since that’s what my old 2.3 came out of.
Edit: beware I looked up the focus diagram and it has both wires at the coil plugs the same color so that could make things confusing so be careful

Quadspark A=cylinder 1, B=2, C=3, D=4

Ign 1 will go from microsquirt to Quadspark yellow and Blue (spark A and D in)
Ign 2 will go from microsquirt to Quadspark Orange and Dark green (spark B and C)
Quadspark A White goes to coil 1 Light green-White
Quadspark B Pink goes to coil 2 Pink-White
Quadspark C Light Green goes to coil 3 White-Pink
Quadspark D Violet goes to coil 4 Dark Green-Violet
All Black Quadspark wires go to a good ground
All coil plugs have a red wire which should receive fused Power

Quadspark wire colors and uses for reference
Yellow- spark A in
White- spark A out
Orange- spark B in
Pink- spark B out
Dark green- spark C in
Light green- spark C out
Blue- spark D in
Violet- spark D out
