Default Stubborn oil pan leaks

Long project, almost complete but leaking like a bastard.

88 2.3T in a 96 Ranger. Stock 88 pan, I've tried it with two different gaskets and most recently no gasket and thick rtv. It has leaked oil every time, accumulating and dripping from between the block and transmission. I have replaced the rear main within the last 10,000 miles and confident it is not the problem.

Is there a better pan than the stamped tbird pan ?? I test fit the aluminum ranger pan but had interference so didn't use it.

The pan I'm using has what look like rubber alignment strips along the rails? Im thinking maybe these were from the factory to aid assembly?? It seems these lines are not straight and previously caused the gasket to distort when it tightened down. Frustrated to pull the pan again.

Did you RTV the corners of the rear main cap when installed? The cap itself, at the block.

This past time I laid the RTV thick everywhere I could get it. Yes the cap got bathed in RTV too, I read somewhere that skipping the gasket and going thick with sealer would do the trick.

he means where the rear main cap mates to the block

NOT where the oil pan seals to the main cap

Also what brand and color of RTV did you use?

if you had any sort of oil film on the pan or block, the rtv will not seal and cause a leak

next, on the stamped pan, are you using the load spreading bars that it had from the factory?

did you check the oil pan holes for distortion?

Since its at the back of the block, did you also check the oil galley plugs behind the flywheel?

I would look for a leak or crack on the oil feed line. where it comes out of the head, the manifold that screws into the head or the u bend on the line itself. they are known to crack or leak.

id bet money air bender is right. ive had the same problem with feed line cracking.

With cork gaskets I have good luck with permatex high tack. Brush on then lay the gasket on and brush the other side. Use ultra black or Grey or right stuff In the corners small dab will do. Welcome back bogusvo.

Brake clean also breaks down RTV, so I'll discourage the use of that as a solvent when installing the rear cap.

Seemed to take care if the leak with a new Fel Pro gasket and new bolts with a broader flange. The oil feed is braided steel and there's no leak from there or the drain.

I'm still working out the bugs but was able to drive down the road and make some boost without any issue.
